Currently accepting new supervisees

For associates working anywhere in Texas.

This is supervision as a standalone service — you don’t have to work at Zen Life Counseling to be supervised here. Whether you’re at an agency, a group practice, a school or building your own caseload, the supervision is yours and it travels with you.

Individual
$90 a week

One to one, the standard weekly hour. The bulk of most associates’ supervision, and where the harder cases get worked through properly.

Triadic
By arrangement

Two associates with the supervisor — this counts as individual supervision under Texas rules, and you learn a surprising amount from someone else’s caseload. The rate is set per pairing, so email and we’ll work it out with you.

Group
$45 a session

Three or more. Half the cost of an individual hour, a wider range of cases, and the part most associates say they miss once they’re licensed. Remember no more than half your total hours may be group.

What Texas requires

The numbers you’re working toward.

Set by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council. Worth knowing before you choose a supervisor, because the shape of your hours is partly their responsibility.

3,000
Total supervised clock-hours under a Council-approved supervisor.
1,500
Of those, direct client counseling contact. Only actual counseling time counts.
18
Months minimum. The hours cannot be completed any faster.
4
Hours of supervision every month, and no more than half of your total may be group.

Summarised from 22 TAC §681.92. The Council’s own rules are the authority — check them, and ask us anything that isn’t clear.

How we work

Trained to a standard I’d trust with my own family.

A colleague once told me they would trust me to see their own family. I’ve not forgotten it — being trusted at that level is about the highest thing one clinician can hand another. It’s the bar I supervise toward: I want to sign off your hours knowing I’d refer my own loved ones to you without hesitating.

Associate years are hard in a specific way: you’re carrying real clinical weight with less experience than the work demands, and the gap shows up as self-doubt. Good supervision doesn’t remove the gap — it gives you somewhere to bring it.

Expect a mix of case consultation, skill building, and the parts nobody trains you for: documentation that holds up, when to refer out, how to sit with a case that frightens you, and what to do when a client’s material lands too close to your own.

The practice is trauma-informed, so that thread runs through supervision too — pacing, safety and the therapist’s own nervous system are treated as clinical matters, not soft ones.

The aim is a compassionate, non-judgmental space where you can build strong therapeutic alliances and grow across the modalities you want to work in.

Before you commit

Questions worth asking any supervisor.

Including us. You’re choosing someone you’ll bring your hardest cases to for at least eighteen months, so it’s worth weighing how you learn, what you value, the orientation you want to grow into, and where you’re headed after licensure.

What does it cost, and what’s included?

$90 a week for individual supervision, $45 a session for group. Triadic is set per pairing. Whatever you’re quoted anywhere, also ask what happens if you miss a week and whether documentation review sits inside the hour or outside it.

What happens if my caseload doesn’t match your specialty?

Say so early. If your work sits outside what we can supervise well, we’ll tell you and point you toward someone who fits. That’s the same principle we apply to clients.

How do you handle disagreement?

A supervisor carries responsibility for your clinical work, so some calls are theirs to make. Everything else should be a conversation. If you can’t picture disagreeing with someone out loud, they’re the wrong supervisor.

Can supervision hours transfer if I move practices?

Yes — the supervisory relationship is between you and your supervisor, not your employer. That’s the point of supervising outside associates: your hours follow you.

Taking new supervisees now.

Tell us where you are in your hours, what your caseload looks like, and what you want from supervision. We’ll tell you honestly whether we’re a fit.
