About JAMES STURGEON, MA, LPC-ASSOCIATE
SUPERVISED BY JENNIE FINCHER, PHD, LPC-S
My journey began when I experienced the life changing impact of a counselor who expressed unconditional positive regard. At a very young age, I identified that I had the ability to empathize with others and began a love of communicating. I received my B.S. of Psychology at John Brown University, my teaching certification at Louisiana College, and my M.A. of School Counseling at University of Texas at Tyler. I am currently serving the Fort Worth, NRH, Colleyville, Keller, and Mid-Cities areas.
After graduating from John Brown University in 1997, I became a Substance Abuse Counselor-in-Training, working at a correctional facility and later at a 28-day treatment facility. In that capacity, I worked with adults in groups and individual sessions who had experience a wide variety of psychological challenges including trauma, self-image, self-esteem, family systems, depression, and anxiety. Then, I entered the field of public education and later I work in the oil and gas industry. After the collapse of the oil and gas industry, I returned to education and then to counseling. My personal experiences are wide and diverse, providing me with insights in many areas of humanity such as adoption, trauma, multiculturalism, poverty, career change, alcoholism/addiction, co-parenting after divorce, child/adolescent development, and grief.
In the field of education, I served as a classroom teacher for grades 6, 7, and 9-12, and taught every subject of social studies. Although this career was rewarding, my passion was still with mental health. Thus, my current capacity in education is as a School Counselor for children in 3rd through 5th grades.
